A general reference work is a resource that provides information on a wide variety of subjects. These include; dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, thesauruses, etc. Reference sources are a good starting point to become familiar with a research topic, which should utlimately go beyond these resources into academic books and scholarly journals.
